Dreams is a game creation tool where players can create their own content like games, audiovisual experiences and game assets.

During Lockdown that began in March 2020 in the UK, I wanted to give Game Design a try since there were, at the time, no job opportunities for Theatre Sound Technicians.

Dreams was the perfect opportunity for me to design a video game level without having to learn coding as well.

I wanted to see if I could build a similar layout to that level. I did this by creating a playable area and using a variety of game assets from the Dreams community to make the level come to life. Coming from a sound background in Theatre, I incorporated sound effects and music from Media Molecule into my level to make it engaging.

What I wanted to focus on when designing the level was that it would be simple to navigate and that it would look and sound beautiful in the vein of a Nintendo game.

I wanted to see if I'd enjoy the process of game design which, by the time I finished the level in August 2020, I very much did. I enjoyed creating this level so much that I studied for a Masters in Game Design at Kingston University.

 

My inspiration for this level was the first level of one of my favourite games, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.​ The inspiration I took from that first level was the collectables and the construction of its layout.
