I’ve been assigned to design a multiplayer game with a team for my latest masters module!
We’ve decided to make a realistic racing game!
We have made a few iterations before getting to this point.
We originally decided to make a kart racing game set in ancient Egypt where mythical monsters would chase and attack the karts. The goal of the game was to be in the top three places and win the race while avoiding and attacking the monsters with power-ups.
Why did we first decide on a kart racing game with monsters to fight? It’s because it combined our favourite multiplayer games and tastes.

For me, my favourite game is the kart racer, Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fuelled (Fig.01). A big reason for this is because in both the adventure mode and online mode, you don’t kill anybody in order to master the game.
I’ve also come to realise that killing human enemies in games makes me feel uncomfortable even when it’s stylised because I find it difficult to suspend my disbelief.

However graphically violent games like Doom Eternal (Fig. 02) don’t make me uncomfortable because you’re killing monsters that don’t exist in real life.
As for the rest of the team, the multiplayer games that they enjoy the most has violence in it.
Because of these factors, I was happy to design a kart racing game which involved violence against monsters.
During the design process, our programmer let us know that programming an AI monster by May would be difficult. He suggested that we scale down the game and instead make it be a realistic racing game.
This is how we ended up deciding to make a realistic racing game.
